Google Cardboard 1.0 is a fun, DIY virtual reality headset kit for smartphones that assembles into 3D Glasses for an incredibly awesome VR experience.

It transforms your smartphone into a basic virtual reality headset with selected Apps. It's a great way to extend functionality and experiment with VR.

Assemble the kit in less than 3 minutes, drop your device into the little cardboard viewfinder you wind up with, hold it up to your face, and you're immersed in a virtual reality world comparable in resolution to the first version of the Oculus Rift, if not better.

Turn your head to scroll through a row of apps, and on the left side there's a metal washer that's held on by a magnet. Flick it down to click on something. It's incredibly intuitive, and equally impactful.

Google Cardboard works quite well. The instructions on the viewer do have a note of "Peel" where double-sided tape is meant to be affixed. That tape isn't supplied with the kit.

This particular kit fits my Sony Xperia Z5 Compact quite well. One simple mod I used to make the phone sit in the viewer better was some non-slip matting on the inside where the phone sits. Without this it did occasionally slip.

So much fun, and a its great to show off to friends. people can't believe it! This is the DIY kit, but takes under 5 minutes to put together - super simple.
I'm upgrading to a Nexus 6, but the guys at Gadgets said they'll be bringing the bigger cardboards in as well - can't wait!
